Why Galvanize Steel Bar Joists?
Typically bar joists receive a standard gray primer applied to them after being fabricated by a joist manufacturer. But some projects require a more protective coating for the environment that the joists will be exposed such as in car washes or other industrial environments with high humidity or chemical exposure.
Galvanizing, or galvanization, is a manufacturing process where a coating of zinc is applied to steel or iron to offer protection and prevent rusting. There are several galvanizing processes available, but the most common used method is called hot-dip galvanizing.
Galvanized Steel Benefits
Time can be saved on site when the galvanized joists arrive immediately ready to use when delivered.
With galvanization, rust resistance is gained from the zinc coating. The iron in the steel are incredibly prone to rusting, but the layer of zinc acts as a protective buffer between the steel and any oxygen or moisture.
The sacrificial zinc layer ensures that any damaged steel is protected by the surrounding zinc coating. It doesn’t matter if the steel section is completely exposed; the zinc will still corrode first. The coating will corrode preferentially to the steel, creating a sacrificial protection to the areas that are damaged.
Galvanized Open Web Bar Joist Supplier
O'Donnell Metal Deck offers bare steel (unpainted) bar joists for customers wanting to handle their own galvanizing, while also offering to ship galvanized steel bar joists directly to your job site. Be aware there may be additional lead time required to be galvanized regardless of who is responsible for handling the galvanizing of the joists.
It is important for O'Donnell Metal Deck to know during quoting if your project will require the bar joists to be galvanized. In many cases the joists have to be designed to withstand the intense heating and cooling during the hot dip galvanizing process and this will require for more steel to be used in each individual joist.
